George F. Restovich — Rochester

10/6/2008 9:40:38 AM

ROCHESTER — The funeral Mass for George F. Restovich will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Rochester. Monsignor Gerald Mahon will officiate, and the Rev. John Lasuba will concelebrate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Restovich, 62, a longtime Rochester attorney, died Friday (Oct. 3, 2008) at his home.

Born April 12, 1946, in Shreveport, La., he graduated from Jesuit High School. He received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., where he competed as a two-sport star and graduated in 1968 with a degree in English. At Notre Dame, he met Helen Reichert; they married Aug. 3, 1968, in Rochester. Mr. Restovich then attended law school at Louisiana State University, receiving his J.D. in 1971. Following law school, he and his wife moved to Rochester, where they raised their family.

In 1973, Mr. Restovich's law career began when he became an associate in the Patterson Law Office. That same year, he was admitted to practice law before the state and federal courts in Minnesota and became a member of the Minnesota Bar Association. He later was admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1975, he became a partner in the Patterson-Restovich Law Office, where he practiced until 1993, at which time he founded George F. Restovich & Associates. He was a member of the Olmsted County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Minnesota Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the National Diocesan Attorneys Association and the American Arbitration Association.

Mr. Restovich had been active in the Rochester community for the past 40 years. He participated in youth sports as a coach, volunteered at St. John the Evanglist Parish, and served as an officer and member of several nonprofit organizations. He enjoyed golfing with friends, spending time at his cabin, reading and solving crossword puzzles. His greatest passion was his family.

He is survived by his wife; four children, Catherine Restovich, George (Michelle) Restovich, Anna Restovich and Michael (Erica) Restovich; four grandchildren; his mother, Jessica Restovich; four brothers, Michael (Andi) Restovich, John (Pam) Restovich, Joseph Restovich and Paul Restovich; as well as two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, George J. Restovich.

Eddie Kurtz in South Bend – 40 years later

John Walsh's note of October 6th, Monday after the Stanford game and Eddie Kurtz's first game attendance in 40 years:

We had a blast!  Construction traffic delay on the Indiana Toll Road was one factor that caused us to miss the Pep Rally on Friday night, but we had a great weekend at Dave & Stephanie's log house in the woods outside Buchanan, MI.  Dinner at Casey's in New Buffalo on Friday night started things off.

We tailgated with the Dalys and Kevin's excellent grilled steak sandwiches behind the bookstore, then joined the “Great '68” tailgate with Gibbs, Dunigan, (Chgo) Tom McKenna and son Liam, Guerin, Weyer & family, Brian Sullivan, Gene Cavanaugh, Jerry Cherubini, Bob Ptak.  ND couldn't get its running game going, but Jimmy Clausen nevertheless had a personal-best day with more than 300 yards passing and 3 TDs.  A tremendous, sunny day at ND Stadium.

Into the mix for the after-game victory dinner add Shaun Reynolds, who drove over for the night and stayed with Hirschboecks' with us.  Dave and Steph, Dia and I, Geoffrey and Christine, Shaun and Eddie gathered for dinner at Pete's Patio in Niles–a hearty Italian-style restaurant recommended by Dave.

A great weekend, and I think Eddie will echo that!

I am sad to report that Mike Biel died on March 17, 2008. He was a longtime resident of Washington D.C., the father of Gus and Jane, a lawyer, and a funny guy.

Here is a link to a post from a friend of his:

He was a good friend, and I'll miss him.

From Dunigan: Cuggino hole-in-one

In a March 7, 2008 note, Bryan Dunigan reported: “Tom Cuggino, Jerry Goetz, and Joe Kernan were playing golf at Plantation Palms in Tampa last Monday (March 3,2008) and Tom Cuggino had a hole-in-one on the par 3 146 yard 17th hole.  We had all been to Tampa that weekend as Jerry hosted our ND baseball teammates for our annual “spring training/golf” gathering.  It was great to briefly escape this bitter winter.   Many golf balls were fed to the local alligators! ”    Bryan

Seventh grandchild for Chris Murphy and Carmie

In a March 14, 2008 note, Chris Murphy announced: “
my daughter delivered her first child, our seventh grandchild. Mom and son, Merlin Christopher Bellinger, are doing great and came home this afternoon to their Forrest Park home. I am sitting in my son Chris' home in Oak Park while he and his wife are in Hawaii. They sent their two children off to relatives, my son Kevin's in South Bend and her parents in Grand Rapids. In any case, Chris has just taken his show and rape counseling out of the country and did a series of performances in Japan and Korea for the military services due to the increasing problem of rape on the bases. He is doing good work and has turned his passion for acting into a thriving (now international) business helping college students and young people in the military learn the reality of rape and the cultural environment that fosters inappropriate behavior.”

Jim Davis and Forrest Hainline, game thoughts Nov. 3, 2007

Forrest Hainline and Jim Davis had dinner in New York City on Saturday November, 3, and commiserated about the Navy game.  Each wondered if there has ever been such a joyless coach at Notre Dame.  It seems the only “nasty” in the football team is the coach's disposition.
